Taking Care of Your Mental Health
One of the greatest barriers to coping with mental health is the feeling that it isn't right, normal or dignified to be suffering from it and the only real solution to many of our private ordeals is to know that we are not alone. According to a study conducted by MentalHealth.gov, your mental health includes emotional, psychological, financial and social well-being. Our mental health affects our mindset, feelings, and actions. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is a very important aspect at any stage of our life and it often fluctuates based on what is happening for us. For this reason it is important that we never feel as though we are inadequate or ‘not good enough’ if we get out of balance or need extra support, it is perfectly normal to have more stress in our life, we cannot feel on top of the world or happy at all times.
The more we take care of our mental health, the more we can perform close to our optimal performance on our daily tasks and responsibilities as well as those audacious goals that we have. The more we can also reduce the fluctuation between the highs and lows we experience in life. So, how do we take care of our Mental Health? Below is our top 10 suggestions.
1. SLEEP WELL – experts have found that sleep-deprived patients have reduced rational response to external events. These individuals experience mood swings and even schizophrenia. Going to bed early, keep your room dark, exercise, and get natural light, last but not the least is avoiding any alcohol, caffeine and nicotine before bedtime. These are just some tips we can give you so that you can adjust your sleeping pattern and get a good night’s rest.
2. EAT WELL – along with sleeping well is eating well. Poor diets on individuals have a worsening effect on one’s mental health. To boost your mental health through eating, focus on eating plenty of fruits, vegetables along with foods rich in omega-3 acids such as fish, nuts , seeds and plant oils. It’s okay to eat junk foods from time to time, but remember the saying “You are what you eat.” so if you can, mind what you eat and your mind will be at peace.
3. EXERCISE – being active keeps your mind away from things and also improves your body. Exercising at least 3x a week improves your mental health by reducing anxiety, depression and gives a positive mood. Exercising also improves self-esteem and cognitive functions.
4. DRINK ALCOHOL, FROM TIME TO TIME – got you there for a minute didn’t you? Kidding aside, drinking occasionally is okay as long as you stay within the alcohol limit for your body. Avoid getting addicted to alcoholic beverages at all costs, these will worsen your mental health.
5. TAKE A BREAK – Taking a break from something/someone that is exhausting your mental health is one of the best medicines for your mind. Taking a break also lets you avoid burnout.
6. DO THE THINGS YOU LOVE – What are the activities you enjoy? What did you love doing in the past? These are just the few questions that you yourself need to answer. If you do have the answer, what are you waiting for? JUST DO IT!
7. EMBRACE YOUR FLAWS, THEY ARE NORMAL – no person is perfect, accept the flaws that you have as a person and don’t get so worked out about it. Accepting your flaws as a human-being invokes happiness, releases good hormones and boosts your mood. Being happy with who you are lets you enjoy being every moment of your life.
8. MEDITATE REGULARLY- along with the list mentioned above, this one is the most critical. Research have shown that meditation helps alleviate stress and depression. Mindful Meditation helps improve your brain function and alters grey matter concentration within these parts of your brain: the left hippocampus, posterior cingulate cortex, the temporoparietal junction and the cerebellum.
9. TAKE CARE OF OTHERS – caring for others lets you keep up relationships with people close to you and even strengthen your relationships with them. Helping someone is a two-way street and uplifts one’s own being.
10. DON’T BE AFRAID TO TALK ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON FOR YOU – We really can’t do anything about the stigma surrounding mental health. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t or won’t talk about it. Talking about your degrading/worsening mental health makes people around you understand that there are things you need in your life. Never be afraid to keep in touch with people close to you so that you can feel safe sharing to them your problems. We know that talking about mental health is hard, but it’s worth the try. Always remember, TALK WHEN YOU’RE READY.
